Preventive Care
How often should my pet have a wellness exam?
For healthy adult dogs and cats, veterinarians generally recommend a wellness exam at least once a year. Senior pets, typically those aged seven and older, often benefit from twice-yearly exams because age-related changes can progress quickly between annual visits. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters also benefit from regular health assessments. Gladys Pet Hospital offers annual wellness packages to help you stay on track with your pet’s preventive care.
What vaccines does my pet need in Abbotsford?
Core vaccines are recommended for all dogs and cats in Abbotsford regardless of lifestyle. These protect against common and serious diseases such as rabies, distemper, and parvovirus for dogs, and panleukopenia and herpesvirus for cats. Lifestyle vaccines vary depending on your pet’s activities and exposure risks, and our team will help you determine which are appropriate at your first exam. For rabbits and small animals, we will discuss species-appropriate preventive care during your visit. Call (604) 850-2000 or book online to get started.
How do I protect my pet from parasites in Abbotsford?
The Lower Mainland’s mild, damp climate means that fleas are a year-round concern for dogs and cats in Abbotsford, and ticks, including black-legged ticks that can carry Lyme disease, are present in many outdoor areas. Giardia is also common in local water sources and can affect dogs, cats, and small animals. Our team recommends a year-round preventive plan tailored to your pet’s lifestyle, species, and risk profile. Bring your pet in for a wellness exam and we will help you build the right plan.
After Hours and Emergencies
What should I do if my pet has an emergency outside your clinic hours?
If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening emergency and our clinic is closed, please go directly to the Animal Emergency Clinic of the Fraser Valley, located at 6325 204 Street, Unit 302, Langley, BC V2Y 3B3. Their phone number is 604-514-1711. Do not wait. Our team is also available by phone until 9:00pm daily if you need guidance on whether a situation requires immediate emergency care or can wait until we open.
What counts as a veterinary emergency?
Some situations require immediate attention. Contact us right away or go directly to an emergency animal hospital if your pet is experiencing difficulty breathing, collapse or sudden weakness, seizures, suspected toxin ingestion, inability to urinate, severe or uncontrolled bleeding, trauma from an accident, pale or white gums, or signs of extreme pain. When in doubt, call us at (604) 850-2000. We would rather you call and find out it is not an emergency than wait and have a situation worsen. Our team is available by phone until 9:00pm daily.
